Saturday 17 April 2004

US occupation forces have tried to storm the northern Iraqi city of al-Qaim, but have been repelled by resistance fighters, Aljazeera's correspondent reports.
_
The clash occurred after a mortar attack on a US military base in the Jamarik area in the city near the border with Syria on Saturday.
_
Witnesses told Aljazeera several US soldiers had been injured in the attack. "US helicopters were seen transferring the injured to hospital," the witnesses added. Columns of smoke were seen rising from the base.

US continues Iraq border offensive

US forces backed by helicopter gunships and warplanes swept through an area of western Iraq near the Syrian border again today, raiding desert outposts and safe houses in the hunt for the Jordanian militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
_
The US military reported that up to 100 militants had been killed since Operation Matador began on Saturday night in the border city of Qaim, 200 miles west of Baghdad. The offensive, one of the largest undertaken by the US military in Iraq for six months, targeted the followers of Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq. US officials said at least three US marines died in the attacks, and a Los Angeles Times reporter embedded with US forces said 20 American troops were wounded.

Ramadi-A Delicate Lid
by Dahr Jamail | Posted May 17, 2004

He was asked what would happen in Ramadi if the US military attempted to do what it did in Falluja. "This would be worse than Falluja," he replied. "Even now they are hit 3-4 times each day. We are honored by the resistance here."
_
Another man, Abdul Ahab, a 21 year-old student at the Economics College, said, "Security is worse. All Ramadis are against the Americans. I used to think they were different, but after seeing the torturing, I hate them."
_
A 24 year-old student of the Science University here, listening to the conversation, added, "The Americans are invaders. They took their authority by invading, and it is worse here than before they came."
_
All of the men I spoke with were extremely angry. Each question was like taking another lid off of a boiling kettle.
_
The student continued, "They came with a mask of freedom, but we are not free. They brought torture, worse security, and terrorism. They are the terrorists!"

Fallujah parallels in Ramadi

At sunset, as American helicopters swooped over central Ramadi, a small funeral procession for Iraqis killed in the fighting moved slowly through town. But stores remained locked behind metal gratings and few residents ventured onto streets littered with debris and cratered by bombs.

Ramadi is one of the most dangerous places in Iraq.
_
The capital of Anbar province in the heart of a Sunni stronghold, this city on the Euphrates River was a power base for Saddam Hussein and remains a restive hotbed of resistance. If the Iraqi insurgency has a center of gravity, Ramadi, on the main road between Baghdad and Jordan, probably is it.
_
More than 129 U.S. service members have died in Anbar province since President Bush declared the end of major combat operations on May 1, 2003.

Many killed in Ramadi, Falluja raids

US snipers have killed at least 11 people in the Iraqi city of Ramadi, while air strikes on nearby Falluja have left 18 people dead.
_
Dr Khamis al-Saad, general director of Ramadi hospital, told Aljazeera that 11 people, including a woman and children, were killed and another 18 wounded under US fire on Monday.
_
Ambulances and medical teams were targeted by US snipers in different areas of Ramadi, particularly near hospitals for women and children, al-Saad said.
_
Two ambulance drivers and members of medical teams on board the vehicles were also killed, he said.

Rice makes surprise visit to Iraq

More than 400 people have been killed in militant attacks since Iraq's democratically elected government was announced at the end of April.
_
But the US said it had made progress in its week-long Operation Matador.
_
The Americans said they had killed more than 125 rebels for the loss of nine of their own men, with 40 wounded.
_
The campaign, involving air strikes and at least 1,000 ground troops, took place close to the border with Syria.
_
It was the largest campaign against insurgents since the US-led assault on Falluja in November.
